Haircare: JVN Yaaassss

If I ever throw a fantasy dinner party, Jonathan Van Ness gets an invitation. I like supporting people I like, so I decided to try his JVN line of haircare products. I started with the Instant Recovery Serum after seeing it on a "Best of" list. The product lives up to the hype: The texture is lightweight and not at all oily, and the serum left my hair silkier, shinier, and less frizzy. The scent is fresh, clean, and subtle. It's a good "lazy person" product, too—apply to damp hair and leave it in. The clencher for me, though, is that it comes in a glass jar with a metal lid. No plastic!

Back then I passed on the shampoos and conditioners because they came in plastic bottles. Recently I decided to check back and was pleased to find that the company now uses aluminum bottles. I also noticed a commendable Sustainability section on the website. Bravo!

This time I ordered the Nurture Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner. My first impression was great: Everything, packaging included, was plastic-free, except for the bottle pumps, which are recycled post-consumer rather than virgin plastic. My second impression was over the moon: These products are luxe! I knew from that initial lather that I had found exactly what I was hoping for.

Overall, these are high quality products at a reasonable price point. You'll pay more than what you'd pay for a drugstore brand, but you'll get salon quality at a much better price. When you factor in sustainability, that seems like a pretty good deal.

I've been curious about bar shampoos and conditioners, but every stylist I know tells me that they're drying, they create build-up, and I'll hate them. If you've found one you love, please let me know!
